dragon_slayer79 asked: I’m trying to build a homemade wind turbine and I’m going to have the turbine itself on a 1-1/4″ galvanized pipe as the mast on top of a 50′ lattice tower. I’m wanting to be able to run the power cable down the pipe to the pivot point to avoid chaffing of the wire on the tower as it turns in the wind. What I had planned on doing was brazing a bearing to the bottom of the pipe and the bearing would be attached to a plate about 3′ down inside the lattice tower. From there the wire would pass through the bearing pivot point and would pass through support rings every so often down the tower to keep it from flopping around in the wind but keeping it free to twist with the turbine. When I tried to do the brazing the bearing burned up before it was ever hot enough to melt the braze. Any ideas on how to make this or something similar work? Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your time.

I am doing a project and I am wondering if it is cost-effective to install a geothermal energy source or solar panels? How much would installing a geothermal energy source cost, and would it make enough energy to supply a typical Californian family throughout the year?

If you have been considering a solar or wind energy solution for your home or place of business, you may have been discouraged by the astronomical cost of installed solar panels, or wind turbines.
For those small end users who don’t have thousands of dollars to spend on such extravagance, you may want to consider building a solar panel or homemade wind powered generator yourself. By building it yourself, you are obviously saving a lot of money upfront on parts and labor because you are buying the components locally, or on ebay, and assembling it yourself.
If you are concerned that you do not have the required skills for building a solar panel yourself, you would probably be wrong. The fact is that building a solar panel is really fairly easy for the average do it yourselfer. Basically you are buying solar cells, and assembling a weatherproof panel with the cells wired in series to produce electricity. A homemade wind turbine may be more complex, but these are also project that a person with an average DIY ability can create themselves.
When you build your own solar panels, or wind generators from available plans, you can take pride in knowing that you are saving money on your energy costs from something that you made yourself.
It’s a good feeling to be able to make some of your own electricity from the free sources such as the sun and wind.
